As I am based in Warsaw, I have been photographing the refugee crisis produced by the war in Ukraine at the border between Poland and Ukraine. For the last month I have been focusing on the area around the town of Przemysl as I cover this issue for The New York Times.
I was interviewed for VII Insider on 25 March - from my car as I travelled back to the border region - to learn more about how I have been working and what I’ve been seeing. Here is my discussion with David Campbell, managing editor of VII Insider:
Maciek Nabrdalik is a Warsaw-based documentary photographer and a member of VII Photo since 2009. His primary focus is on sociological changes in Eastern Europe. Maciek’s awards include honors from World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, NPPA The Best of Photojournalism, and multiple awards in his native Poland.
Maciek’s project on German Nazi camp survivors worldwide was published as a book, called The Irreversible in 2013. His second book, Homesick, summarizes his long-term project chronicling the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and was published in 2016.
Maciek’s was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University 2016/2017. His work has been exhibited and published internationally.
